Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body focused talk therapy developed by Dr Peter Levine to reduce physical & emotional symptoms which develop following traumatic, overwhelming or highly stressful experiences.
Discussion and activities centre around the physical sensations (rather than a trauma story) which a client can experiences during the session. There are many subtle responses constantly happening in our body, that can be noticed when we are still & focused on the body. The word used for these responses is the “felt sense” within our body.
Working with the felt sense enables to the body to release stored energy & unresolved emotions that were created at the time of an overwhelming event but which were unable to be released at that time.
When this is done the nervous system becomes regulated and the body starts to let go of the tension patterns created at the time of the trauma or distress.
Body awareness & settling techniques experienced during a session can be done at home so that when a stressful situation arises at home or work you are able to immediately release the tension caused from that situation. The more this is practised the less the body over-reacts to stress.
